And earlier today, while taking a quick peek at facebook, I spotted a wonderful video on Susan's page, about an artist I've been wanting to tell you about. Her name is Mary Nohl, and during her later years she was called "the Witch of Fox Point".

Mary Nohl, who lived from 1914 - 2001, turned her lakeside cottage and property into a work of art. And although she was misunderstood by many during her lifetime, she prevailed in the end. I wish I would have known her. . .
Here's the wonderful short video about Mary that I found this morning:
The image at the top of this post is the cover of an excellent book about Mary, which is available from Amazon here. It's a gorgeous book, with lots of pictures and snippets of her writings.
"I like the days best when I have a lot of projects -
each so much fun that I don't know which to do first."
~ Mary Nohl
"Keep getting more ideas -
all of which I have to try."
~ Mary Nohl
I hear you Mary!
You can see more photos of Mary's house here. And read more about her and her work here, here, here, here and here. (Or just google :0) )
We are very fortunate to have quite a number of incredibly talented outsider artists and outsider environments in Wisconsin. Many of them are generously preserved and supported by the Kohler Foundation.

Enchanting Lady as well as her home and garden. She really lived in her art, lovely windows, doorways and stairway treatments!
What an inspirational video! She was very fortunate to be financially independent to pursue her amazing art. I love her upbeat attitude. Great post, Angela!!! xo

I love this so much I have sent it on to a dear artist friend of mine, Lyndia Terre. Thank you.

Yes, I remember going there in high school every Halloween just to get scared! I remember the scary spiked fencing she had up in her yard.
I need to listen to her video now..!
Great post! And an incredible artist. Thanks for the video. Wouldn't she have been someone to know - what an inspiration.
What an amazing artist.
I love how she used elements of nature in her work.
A beautiful mind indeed.
Thanks for sharing
Angela, Thank you so much for this!
I love her! I will be coming back and checking out Susan too.
As I live alone, never married (yet) and no children, an artist too, I wonder if in my later years they will call me the witch of Ranchos :-).
I do not think Mary is an outsider artist, too educated in my book.
Have a wonderful weekend sweetie.
xoxo

Yup, I just put it on my tumblr blog, too

Angela, I love people that dance to the beat of their own inner drum!
I have always loved that even as a child. HUGS and thank you for posting this magical woman and her heart touching work. It is sad that so many don't get noticed, or only by so few and live without the love and praise that they might have enjoyed while living.
