Sophia's Dream

"Sophia's Dream"
acrylic, oil pastel, graphite, polymer clay, wings
on 16" x 20" wrapped canvas

"Sophia's Dream" turned out to be much more colorful than I thought, but I guess happy dreams should be full of color.  (The colors of the painting are not actually this bright, though.  I tried and tried, but I couldn't get the colors right in the photos.  The actual colors are warmer and a bit more muted.)

Sophia insisted on having a sweet little face.  No matter what I did, there it was.  The name "Sophia" means wise or wisdom, so I guess she knows best.

The little polymer clay piece I had made a few years ago found the perfect spot.

I'm still in love with that Liquitex Super Heavy Gesso for adding those touchable swirls of texture.

For sealing the oil pastel on this painting, I used a light application of golden soft gel medium matte again.

Here's Sophia, next to "She, Emerging."

It makes me happy just to look at them!

I haven't dreamed about flying for a very long time, and I know why.  But I think dreams of flying might finally be just around the corner for me again.

How about you?  Do you ever dream of flying?

“Life is like a box of crayons.
Most people are the 8 color boxes,
but what you're really looking for are the 64 color boxes
with the sharpeners on the back.
I fancy myself to be a 64 color box,
though I've got a few missing.
 It's okay though,
because I've got some more vibrant colors
like periwinkle
at my disposal.
I have a bit of a problem though
in that I can only meet the 8 color boxes.
Does anyone else have that problem?
I mean there are so many different colors of life,
of feeling,
of articulation.
So when I meet someone who's an 8 color type...
I'm like,
hey girl,
Magenta!
and she's like,
oh,
you mean purple!
and she goes off on her purple thing,
and I'm like,
no I want Magenta!”
~ John Mayer *

* I never thought I'd be quoting John Mayer, but if it fits, it fits.  :)

    1. Thank you, Judy! I like the idea that "she" is grounded and "sophia" is soaring! I didn't notice that, but you're right. That's very appropriate and symbolic, isn't it? I love how the subconscious works!

    1. Hello Deborah! Yes, I am very happy with how they turned out. :) (The colors are actually a bit mellower than they appear in the photos.)

I wonder what my next one will be, too! It's always a surprise to me. :)

Deine Arbeit inspiriert mich deshalb sehr!

  8. Exquisite!!! Angela, you know how to paint real angels. Woman angels, bird angels, tree angels, all angels.

And not just angels. The solar system and heavens too.

    I love!

I have not flown for a long while and have not flown much in my dreams, I seem to be stuck to this grounded earth :-).

    1. You're welcome, Patty! The acrylic medium has been working so well for me, that I haven't even tried any other options yet. Good luck using it on your plaster cloth sculptures!
